A Subtle Allegory: Concerning the Secrets of Alchemy — Michael Maier, ed. Tarl Warwick | Paperback
The Phoenix does not announce itself. It simply rises — and only those who know how to look will recognize what they are seeing.
Written in the late 17th century, Michael Maier's Subtle Allegory encodes the answer to alchemy's central riddle in the form of a short story about the Phoenix — a creature of perpetual transmutation, death, and rebirth. Maier (1568–1622), German physician, alchemist, and Rosicrucian, understood that the Great Work could not be stated plainly. It had to be veiled. And so he veiled it, in a story that rewards those with the wisdom to read beneath the surface.
This edition is edited by Tarl Warwick, who has brought Maier's text to modern readers with care and precision. Brief, dense, and quietly radical.
